Is Brand Still a Growth Lever in 2026?
For years, marketers have been asked to prove everything.
How many leads?
How much revenue?
What was the ROAS?
Which campaign converted?
Fair questions.
But somewhere along the way, brand started sounding like a luxury.
Something you invest in when the real growth work is already done.
I think that's backwards.
Brand may matter more precisely because growth is getting easier to copy
AI is making content cheaper.
Automation is making campaigns faster.
Platforms are getting better at targeting.
Creative can be generated in seconds.
Everyone has access to increasingly similar tools.
That's great for marketers.
It's also a problem.
When everyone can optimize, optimization stops being a differentiator.
The question becomes: why should someone choose you?
That's where brand comes back in.
Brand is the reason behind the click
Performance marketing is very good at finding people who might want something.
Brand helps answer a different question:
Why you?
Two companies can sell essentially the same product.
They can target the same audience.
They can run ads on the same platforms.
They can use the same AI tools.
And still, one will grow faster because people remember it, trust it or simply feel something about it.
That's not fluffy marketing.
That's competitive advantage.
But brand doesn't mean a beautiful logo
This is where the conversation often gets confused.
Brand isn't the campaign.
It isn't the logo.
It isn't the brand book sitting in a folder somewhere.
Brand is the accumulated answer to one question:
What do people expect from us?
• It comes from your product.
• Your customer experience.
• Your communication.
• Your people.
• Your reputation.
• Your category.
• And, increasingly, the stories other people tell about you.
A strong brand makes the decision easier.
The brand vs. performance debate is outdated
I don't think the answer is to choose brand over performance.
That's the wrong fight.
You need both.
Performance helps you capture existing demand.
Brand helps create preference before demand exists.
Performance can tell you what happened yesterday.
Brand helps influence what happens tomorrow.
The strongest companies don't build a wall between the two.
They make them reinforce each other.
A great brand makes performance more efficient.
A great performance engine tells you where the brand has room to grow.
The real challenge: proving the value of brand
This is where marketers need to get better.
Saying "brand is important" isn't enough.
CMOs need to connect brand investment to business outcomes.
That might mean tracking:
• branded search
• direct traffic
• consideration
• preference
• customer acquisition efficiency
• retention
• pricing power
• share of voice
• market share
Not everything happens immediately.
That's the point.
Brand compounds.
A performance campaign can stop producing results the moment you turn it off.
A strong brand can keep working when you're not paying for the impression.
So, is brand still a growth lever?
More than ever.
But not because brand has become more important in isolation.
It's because everything around it is becoming easier to copy.
The technology gets democratized.
The channels get crowded.
The creative tools become accessible to everyone.
The competitive advantage moves somewhere else.
Toward meaning.
Toward trust.
Toward recognition.
Toward distinctiveness.
Toward the reason people remember you when the algorithm isn't making the decision for them.
The future of marketing won't be brand versus performance.
It will be brands that use performance to grow and brand to make that growth harder to copy.
